Spinal Conditions that Affect the Head

spinal-conditions-affect-head1

Sciatica refers to the irritation of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve runs along the lower spine, extending all the way down through the pelvis and buttocks. From that point, the sciatic nerve even branches out into the upper legs, knees and eventually the feet. If there happens to be any form of pressure put on this nerve, then it can instantly create an irritation that tends to lead to people experiencing various levels of back, neck, leg and arm pain.

The spine is like the super highway of the body, connecting everything together. Someone who is experiencing spinal issues may also experience pain in other areas of the body. The spreading of this pain will require specific and customized treatment. Below are two of the conditions, Meniere’s disease and Trigeminal Neuralgia, which can affect the head as a result of spinal injury.

Meniere’s Disease

Meniere’s disease refers to a disorder of the inner ears that can cause people to experience a number of negative issues including vertigo, tinnitus, a sense of heavy pressure in the ear area and experiencing different levels of temporary hearing loss. Meniere’s disease equally affects both men and women, with most people receiving a diagnosis when they are over the age of 40.

People who receive the diagnosis of Meniere’s disease can often feel when an episode is coming. The warning signs tend to involve experiencing various hearing fluctuations in the beginning stages. Next, people will experience a feeling of being off balance, also known as vertigo, which can vary from minimal to quite serious. This feeling of imbalance can easily bring about a feeling of nausea, which can often lead to vomiting.

Those who have Meniere’s disease also tend to experience frequent migraines. The nervous system responds to certain triggers that can cause the blood vessels in the head to constrict. Constricting blood vessels can lead to the chemical reactions that cause migraine headaches. While a regular headache may be more of a dull ache that goes away in a few hours, migraines are much worse.

Unfortunately, any episode can last up to four hours. Severe episodes usually require people to sleep for a few hours in order to fully recuperate once the episode is over. While there is no easy way no way to determine when an episode is going to occur or how long it is going to last, we can offer various treatment options.

Meniere’s Disease Treatment

Since many of the symptoms of Meniere’s disease are similar to other diseases, we will need to first eliminate the other possibilities before giving a proper Meniere’s disease diagnosis. Since one of the prevalent symptoms of Meniere’s disease includes vertigo, we will often ask questions pertaining to how often the individual experiences dizziness and/or lightheadedness.

There is currently no cure available for those diagnosed with Meniere’s disease. Current Meniere’s disease treatment options include taking medication prescribed by a professional, eating a healthy overall diet, surgery and using a non-invasive pressure pulse generator known as a Meniett Device.

Chiropractic treatment options are also available. A chiropractor is able to use special techniques that can help to relieve the pressure that is currently causing any inner ear issues. When someone chooses a chiropractor to address their Meniere’s disease issues, it means the patient is choosing a non-invasive treatment option. Most patients often prefer a non-invasive option since it is a safe and allows for ongoing results.

Trigeminal Neuralgia Symptoms and Treatment

Trigeminal Neuralgia, TN, is a painful disorder that affects the facial area. When someone receives a diagnosis for this condition, they tend to experience a number of sudden and sporadic bursts of pain that directly affect the forehead, scalp, eyes, nose, lips and the upper/lower jaw. This pain is due to the trigeminal nerve that directly connects to the brain. When this nerve is in misalignment, it has the ability to create a chronic pain condition that directly and negatively affects the facial area.

The main symptom that people with TN experience is experiencing facial pain. The pain tends to often come on quickly and without warning but can also be slow and constant. The episodes tend to come and go without any type of pattern. These symptoms can get worse over time, which can get in the way of people being able to live their life to the fullest.

Since the symptoms of TN can mimic a number of other spine-related conditions, we will need to conduct a professional trigeminal neuralgia examination. This examination will include a physical exam as well as a neurological exam. We will also ask the patient questions in order to determine the patient’s condition and the most effective form of treatment. If the patient is struggling with TN, then we will begin the treatment process for that condition.

Treatment options for those suffering with TN include taking medication prescribed by a professional, exercising, meditation therapy, nutritional therapy and surgery. We will recommend the most effective treatment option after we examine the patient’s condition.
