Anyone who has suffered an injury to their back or is living with constant discomfort understands the importance of proper back pain care. Given how debilitating back pain can be, it is critical to know what steps to take when the pain begins and how to continue managing it so that the symptoms do not flare-up or get worse. We recommend visiting our office for treatment to address the root cause of the pain. This is the best way to experience long-term and sustained relief. In the meantime, there are some things that can be done to relieve the discomfort at home.
Ibuprofen, as an example, is an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication that will help to relieve back pain by reducing swelling and the pain caused by it.
Natural solutions for inflammation
Those who do not wish to take medication may consider natural supplements that are known to help reduce inflammation. Turmeric is one of them and it can be added to food or swallowed orally in capsule form. This is a popular Indian spice that people may be familiar with if they eat curry or dine in Indian restaurants. With its bright orange color, turmeric is hard to miss. It has been used in India for treating a variety of ailments and now has become popular in the West as well. Turmeric is affordable, easy to consume and its anti-inflammatory properties may have a positive impact on the reduction of inflammation and back pain.
Rotating heat and ice
Using a heat pack can be helpful for reducing soreness and tension. Simultaneously, ice is a natural way to reduce inflammation and swelling. The combination of the two can help to relieve back pain and is an important part of any back pain care.
Ideally, patients would visit our office and discuss the benefits of a professional massage for back pain care. At home, if someone is willing to provide a light back massage, this can be helpful for alleviating tension and pain. Some home massagers may help as well but they typically do not get deep enough in the muscles to truly provide pain relief. Ultimately, the best option is to schedule a professional massage on a regular basis.
Take a bath with Epsom salts
If lactic acid has built up in the muscles, taking a bath with Epsom salts can help to flush these out of the body and to relieve some of the tension caused by them.
An important aspect of back pain care is to stretch on a regular basis. It is important to stretch correctly, slowly and gently. Otherwise, there is a risk of irritating the back even further. We typically recommend that our patients visit us and schedule a physical therapy appointment to learn the correct stretches and techniques that can be used at home. Stretching on a daily basis or even several times a day can be incredibly useful if done correctly.
In our chiropractic office, we treat back pain, working to align the spine and relieve tension and pain caused by the vertebrae being out of alignment. Anyone who is suffering from back pain should visit our office first. We can then provide information about what can be done at home and make recommendations regarding massage and physical therapy. This is the best way to achieve both immediate and long-term relief.
