Health Benefits from NUCCA Chiropractic Adjustments

You may have heard of chiropractic treatment, or maybe you have been to a few appointments. For those who do not know, what exactly does a chiropractor do?

Chiropractors are specially trained professionals who have both a traditional undergraduate degree and four more years of training in a Doctor of Chiropractic program. These programs are rigorous and uphold standards to ensure that your chiropractor is equipped to provide you with the best treatment. While in chiropractic college or after many chiropractors will find a technique that they have a passion for. When I was in chiropractic college there were reportedly over 250 different named techniques.

What is chiropractic care?

Chiropractic is a health care discipline which emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery.

The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health. In addition, Doctors of Chiropractic recognize the value and responsibility of working in cooperation with other health care practitioners when in the best interest of the patient.

A chiropractor focuses on the bones, muscles and nerves and how they interact. Their basic technique involves the chiropractic adjustment that is a procedure in which trained specialists (chiropractors) use their hands or a small instrument to apply a controlled, sudden force to a spinal joint. The goal of this procedure, also known as spinal manipulation, is to improve spinal motion and improve your body’s physical function.

What is NUCCA Chiropractic Care?

NUCCA Chiropractic adheres to the central tenants of the chiropractic profession. However, the founder of NUCCA recognized the primary importance of the atlas vertebra and its relation to the upper cervical spine.

The NUCCA Chiropractic Procedure, is a unique technique within the profession that focuses on the upper cervical spine (also known as the Craniocervical Junction). This is where the head meets the top bone of the neck, the atlas vertebra. This region is very important to have balanced. Even small misalignments of this region cause issues for patients. Some may have one symptom while others may have two or more symptoms, this is known as a syndrome. The Atlas Subluxation Complex will cause the the Atlas Subluxation Complex Syndrome (ASCS).  The ASCS can cause discomfort and pain, it may also alter function and health. This will likely be due to a negative effect to the Autonomic Nervous System which is responsible for adaptation to the needs of the moment and maintaining normal body environment. This is homeostasis.

When the atlas vertebra misaligns to produce the Atlas Subluxation Complex there can be an alteration of upper cervical joint receptors as well as a traction of the lower brainstem and upper cervical spinal cord. This may effect your health by increasing the sympathetic nervous system which alters the balance of the autonomic nervous system, and thereby homeostasis.

With pre-adjustment x-rays and post-adjustment x-rays the NUCCA Chiropractor is focused on achieving a large degree of adjustment to all the misalignment factors that were demonstrated on the pre x-rays. This is referred to the Restoration Principle: restore the alignment of the upper cervical spine which will restore optimal function of the nervous system and therefore should be a restoration of health.
