According to a recent study out of the University of Chicago, regular chiropractic care can help patients by delivering a high blood pressure treatment. They found that patients who underwent chiropractic treatments for high blood pressure saw as significant of a reduction is those who were taking prescription medications. This is according to the leader of the study, George Bakris, MD. Doctor Bakris is the head of the Hypertension Center at the University of Chicago, where the study was conducted (https://www.webmd.com/hypertension-high-blood-pressure/news/20070316/chiropractic-cuts-blood-pressure).
In this particular study, patients saw a reduction in their blood pressure from an adjustment aimed at aligning the Atlas vertebrae at the top of the spine. This is a donut-shaped bone at the very top of the spine that holds up the head. When adjustments were directed towards this particular vertebra, the result was significant enough that they found it was even more effective than taking two types of blood pressure medication combined.
Why the Atlas vertebrae is important
The Atlas vertebrae is at the top of the spine, which means the vertebrae can impact all areas of the body. If it is out of alignment, it will be easy to pinch a nerve and disrupt other areas of the body, including the body's ability to control blood pressure. If the vertebrae are out of alignment, then there will be a disruption of blood flow.
Our high blood pressure treatment is a natural way to decrease high blood pressure
The benefit of this treatment can help to bring blood pressure back to normal levels and do so without the use of medication. This is critical for anyone who is suffering from high blood pressure and does not wish to use any type of prescription drugs in an attempt to normalize it. There are many risks of side effects, allergic reactions, the cost and fear dependency, so it is important to seek all options first.
A long-term perspective
If a chiropractic adjustment reduces blood pressure, then it may not be necessary every week and will only be necessary on occasion. Patients can use this treatment instead of taking medication on a daily basis. We have found that a lot of patients are simply uninterested in the demands placed on them by taking daily medication. They would rather have a long-term solution and chiropractic may be able to offer it.
We say “may,” because whether this treatment works or not depends on the cause of high blood pressure. The best thing to do is to visit our office for an examination and consultation. We will examine the spine, determine if any of the vertebrae are out of alignment and then use spinal manipulation to bring them back into alignment. If a misaligned vertebra is a cause for high blood pressure, then the blood pressure will begin to normalize. If not, it will still be necessary for patients to take medication.
